In Ukraine this species is distributed in the Carpathians. It nests in mixed spotlight forests. Its number in Carpathian region is decreased. Last years records of the Three-toed Woodpecker became more frequent in the north of Zhitomir region. In 2004 an occupied nest was found in the Polisky Nature Reserve (51.32 N, 28.00 E). The pair successfully raised 4 youngs. This is the first breeding record in Ukraine outside of the Carpathians. [Ukrainian].
