A riddle of the Carrion Crow. - V.N. Grishchenko. - Berkut. 17 (1-2). 2008. - P. 179-182.
H. Goebel (1879) has written about the Carrion Crow as a rare breeding species in former Uman district (west part of present Cherkasy region, central Ukraine). He found one nest with 4 eggs and two nests of mixed pairs with the Hooded Crow (3 and 4 eggs). In both mixed pairs females were Hooded Crows. Later the breeding Carrion Crows were never found in Ukraine. Only rare vagrants in west regions were registered. Moreover, even in Poland this bird was found on breeding in XIX cent. only once: in 1890 near Świdnica (Tomiałojć, Stawarczyk, 2003). Reliability of these data is discussed. A small insular area outside of main breeding range of European subspecies could arise as a result of its pulsation. Later the area has disappeared and was not discovered by other researchers.
