Pygmy Cormorant is a vulnerable species included in the Red Book of Ukraine and many other conservation lists. It regularly winters in Danube delta. The number depends on weather conditions. January of 2010 was very cold and snowy. The mass mortality of Pygmy Cormorants was registered near the town of Vilkove. The total number of dead birds is estimated in several tens individuals.
